If the cabinets aren't heirlooms or wildly expensive, why not rub them down and paint them white.

I would stain paint or something they would look nicer if they match. But is anyone going to be looking in there anyway? who cares if they work out for you.

Don't get a headboard right now - then make one from just a piece of plywood, batting and material - staple gun it on the back.
Honestly you don't have to have a headboard.

Paint the dressers to match the head board. When you can afford it, you can get matching stuff.

We have mismatched nightstands in our room.
I totally love mismatched furniture.
There are easy ways to make two mismatched pieces look harmonious.
1) Unify with hardware. Find hardware for your husband's dresser that is not an exact match to yours, but has similar tones. look up vandyke's hardware on the internet. or if yours are easy to remove, you can carefully save the hardware from yours and buy similar hardware for both dressers.
If you can, you can also refinish your husband's dresser. the color will never be the same being different woods, but you can refinish it to a color that would be a warm tone, a cool tone, etc that would compliment the other a little without matching.
2) Unify with symmetry. You can skip the hardware idea or go for it - but If something is done to one, do to the other - if one has a print hanging above it - do the same with the other. If one has a few books on top, do it with the other. You get the idea. Or buy a set of matching lamps. The items do not have to be identical on the other dresser, just harmonious. But do pick the same color dresser scarf or something.
3) With your headboard - if they are both medium to dark woods, the white would look like a third thing in the room that doesn't match. If they are darker woods i would go wrought iron or better yet, i would buy an inexpensive headboard or piece of wood and cover it with fabric. If you pick a geometric, i would buy fabric from one of the secondary colors in it and make dresser scarfs. If you pick a solid, find a subtle print for the dressers people will notice it versus dressers that don't match.
what i mean by dresser scarf is not necessarily anything drapey. it could just be like a placemat, just cut to more of the shape of the dresser top to protect it and add color.
Also, another point to note - make sure the dressers are clean.
And one more thing - you can always check estate sales and yard sales and second hand shops - you may find a dresser that works better with yours for cheap money as well.
