Following on from my last post regarding the “away” from mentality vs the “towards” mentality, I thought I needed to clarify things further and give you a real life example.
We sometimes call these two concepts the carrot & the stick.
This refers to something like donkey training where two ways of getting a donkey to walk/obey you are to use the stick to hit it and then act as a deterrent or you use a carrot to entice the donkey to walk towards the treat.
This, in terms of your tennis is the difference between never coming to the net on a short ball because you often miss the volley and so you avoid doing it and coming to the net when you need to and trying to execute the volley you have been working on and congratulating yourself for every good one in the knowledge that you are getting better everytime and indeed closer to your target of becoming a good volleyer which only makes you a more complete player.
The real life example is Chris, who today destroyed a pretty good opponent in the club tournament 6-2 6-0 having built his game around his powerful forehand (after reading my Beat All The Tennis Players You Want Special Report – and having some lessons) that he started off always missing.
He didn’t avoid it and tell himself off about missing it (stick), he carried on working on it safe in the knowledge that every small success was a step closer to the type of game he wanted to have (carrot).
Hope that makes things even clearer.

There are many different strategies and most will not work at every game.  Having a strategy is definitely a step in the right direction as so many players don’t ever bother to think of a planning.
In the first few hands of the poker tournament play only your best cards. Bet low to begin with, you don’t want to run out of cash halfway through the game. Some experts might even suggest only going all in if playing with Aces, Kings or Queens.  Once you’ve got a better idea of what your fellow players are like you are comfortable now.  Bet higher, take a few risks and hopefully start raking in the chips.
Don’t bet against the big dogs on the playing field though, the ones with the largest stacks of chips as you can tell at this point that these are the people who really know what they’re doing and will be able to smell a bluff a mile away. Be careful in all your choices after all we want to see this right through to the end.   We know now you’ve got the focus and the discipline to beat the other players at the table as you’ve outlasted all the others. At this point you don’t want to get over confident though, focus your attention on taking out the players with the smaller stacks. Stay aggressive however you don’t want your opponents to pressurize you.   You want to put the pressure on your opponents as most rounds are won by the aggressor at this point.

I'm trying to take the jump from a career in the corporate world to professional poker player? Has anybody done it already? Any good paths to follow? I'm placing in local games/tournaments but don't know the first thing about going national/international. Help!
